Tributes to Beethoven
On the 250th Anniversary of his Birth
NIKOLAY KHOZYAINOV , Piano
In 1842, 15 years after Beethoven’s death, ten of the greatest living pianists: Henselt, Döhler, Mendelssohn, Moscheles, Liszt, Kalkbrenner, Chopin, Czerny, Taubert and Thalberg, decided to produce a collective piano album, to fund the construction of a statue in Beethoven’s memory, in Bonn (his birthplace).
The statue was unveiled three years later (1845), on the 75th anniversary of the composer’s birth, during the first Beethoven Festival. The statue still stands on Münsterplatz in Bonn.
The recital program composed by pianist Nikolay Khozyainov (Russia) consists of works by Liszt and Schumann (an adaptation of a movement from Beethoven’s symphony and variations on Beethoven’s theme), works by Chopin and Mendelssohn composed especially for the album, and more.
